Police have arrested two men after a teenager was attacked with on a busy street in north London on Thursday (27/03/14) and another was stabbed.

Police were called to Upper Street in Islington at around 6pm after a young adult male reportedly almost had his hand severed in the attack, which took place as diners were eating at tables on the street. Islington is one of the most popular areas for drinkers in the evening and crowds throng to the cheap restaurants.

It is also now mainly a student area heavily populated with licensed premises.

Islington also has some of the most deprived Local Authority housing estates in the country, sitting side-by-side with affluent areas in the borough and new blocks of student accommodation.

Police say that the machete attack may be the result of a “postcode war” between groups of young adults in the area, as Islington has seen a “surge” in postcode crimes related to gang violence recently.

The victim of Thursday’s attack was helped by local restaurant workers who stemmed the bleeding. The18-year-old victim of the attack was carrying a machete, the Evening Standard reports. The other teenager who was stabbed in the attack was carrying a hachet.

Both men were taken to the Whittington Hospital in Highgate, north London for treatment and were later arrested for causing grievous bodily harm.

The incident is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police’s Trident Unit, which investigates gang crimes in London. Detectives are asking witnesses to the incident to come forward.

The attack has raised concerns that gang violence is escalating in the borough, as gangs mark out their territory. So-called “postcode” crimes have resulted in gang attacks in other areas of north London in recent years, such as Tottenham, which borders Islington.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police told the Evening Standard:

“Police were called at around 6pm to reports of one man attacking another with what was reported to be an axe or hatchet.

“Officers attended and found a male in his late teens suffering from an injury to his arm. Another teenager was also injured. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

“Officers from Islington are investigating.”
