Gwynedd Council is working with the Welsh Government and other local authorities in support of the all-Wales Hate Crime Awareness Week from 10-17 October.

The Welsh Government created All Wales Hate Crime Awareness week to increase understanding and encourage victims to come forward and report hate crimes against them to the police and victim support services.

The campaign will raise awareness of hate crimes involving any perceived “difference” in an individual, which might involve sexual orientation, gender, religion, ethnicity or lifestyle choice.

Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for equality, Councillor Peredur Jenkins, said:

“We know that there is significant under-reporting of hate crime, which we want to tackle through raising awareness and providing reassurance to victims that they should not suffer alone.

“I am pleased that Welsh Government continues to raise the profile of this very important issue – and I am confident that through partnership working we can make a real difference.

“To truly tackle hate crime, there needs to be an increase in reporting.

“Unless the majority of these crimes are reported, we will never get a true picture of the problem – and nothing will change.”

The council says victims of hate crime may be targeted in a number of ways – including verbal abuse, offensive graffiti, threats, damage to property, assault, cyber bullying, abusive texts, emails or phone calls.

Hate crimes can be reported via the police or online www.reporthate.victimsupport.org.uk.
