Investigation into Metropolitan Police declares 'failings' in child sexual abuse cases and football sexual abuse claims leads to creation of a new hotline for the NSPCC.

Abuse-whether sexual or domestic; physical or emotional, is a crime. This week, the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary found 75% of Metropolitan Police child sexual abuse cases were dealt with "inadequately" or in need of improvement. A hotline has been set up this week by the NSPCC after four ex-footballers spoke out about being sexually abused by their coaches as children.

HM Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) inspectors discovered 277 of 384 cases investigated had been poorly handled. Of those, 38 were referred back to the Met because inspectors believed the children involved may still be at risk. An "indefensible" lack of leadership in child protection was announced, with no single officer in charge. The Met apologised for any failures but London's mayor described the situation as "unacceptable". The force's assistant commissioner Martin Hewitt said the safety of youngsters was a priority but added that child protection "often involves complex social problems which cannot be solved by police alone".

A hotline, set up after four ex-footballers spoke out about being sexually abused by coaches as children, has received more than 50 calls within its first two hours, the NSPCC says. FA and children's charities have urged players to come forward after four ex-professionals claim they were assaulted by former coach. An outpouring of public support followed the footballers' announcements, for which they waived their anonymity, and many have praised them for their bravery in speaking out. Paul Stewart: Football sex abuse victims 'could number hundreds'. Mr Stewart, who says he was abused by a coach for four years as a child, said the sport could face allegations on the scale of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

The hotline, which is supported by the FA, will be available 24 hours a day on 0800 023 2642.
