Fifty pots filled with cannabis were discovered on the side of a major Devon road in Ottery St Mary’s resulting in police closing a lane to deal with the incident.

Workmen first contacted the local police in the morning of Tuesday 10th of October, when the found 50 pots of cannabis had been dumped at the side of the A30 near Daisy Mount roundabout in the Ottery St Mary’s area.

Devon and Cornwall police decided to close one of the lanes in order to deal with the situation, a decision that angered many of the busy Devon commuters who were travelling during the lunchtime rush. The road remained closed for several hours whilst the police dealt with the dumped drugs, eventually, it reopened at 6pm.

Police are unsure how long the drug had been at the side of the road, it was also unclear whether the pots had been dumped there or if they were being blatantly grown there. They have currently made no arrests but are investigating the situation and monitoring the scene closely.

The discovery comes shortly after a recent survey indicated that the South West is suffering a drugs problem, with 9.5% of people asked admitting to taking illegal drugs in 2016/17. The only places with a higher percentage of illegal users were London (9.6%) and the South East (10%). The vast majority of drug users were between the ages of 20 and 24 with many of them likely to be students.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, cannabis was revealed to be the most popular drug in the region with 1 in 14 admitting to smoking it.
