A butler who underwent cosmetic dentistry has won a settlement of £17,000, after the veneers he had fitted kept falling out.

The Evening Standard newspaper reports that butler Meo Mattioli, 43, from Kennington in southeast London visited Harley Street dentist Dr Simon Darfoor after seeing a special offer advertising eight veneers for £1,700. Veneers usually cost £400 each.

The treatment began in April 2013 and although Mr Mattioli could only have seven veneers fitted, he was at first pleased with the result.

However, just a few days after the final appointment with Dr Darfoor, one veneer fell out, followed by a further two.

Dr Darfoor replaced these, but another two came off. The butler was due to go on holiday in the summer, so Dr Darfoor gave him a supply of bonding gel to make sure the veneers stayed in place.

When Mr Mattioli returned from his holiday, the veneers fell off again.

Mr Mattioli told the Evening Standard:

“At least three of the veneers fell out, which Dr Darfoor blamed on the adhesive used.

“With veneers, the front of the tooth has to be drilled away, so I was left with the nerves exposed. Even breathing was uncomfortable.”

On returning from his holiday in summer 2013, Mr Mattioli consulted another dentist and was told that the problem had been caused because Dr Darfoor had not taken into account Mr Mattioli’s chewing action, which was causing the veneers to fall out.

Mr Mattioli says that he was left in pain and discomfort – and will now have to have remedial treatment to correct the problem.

Dr Darfoor has agreed a settlement but has not accepted liability – and added that he could not comment on the case of an individual patient because of patient confidentiality. However in a statement he said would “robustly defend” any allegations or suggestions involving sub-standard care:

“The fundamental tenet of the dental profession is to seek to work with your patients to provide excellent clinical care,” the statement says.

“If there is a breakdown in the patient-dentist relationship, or the patient decides to follow a more extensive course of treatment than originally suggested to achieve their desired goals, then it would be fair, considerate and appropriate to leave the patient in a financial position to complete their treatment with another practitioner.”
