NHS England figures recently revealed that the number of patients waiting more than 18 weeks for routine treatment is the largest since September 2008.
The official data showed that more than 382,000 patients were waiting longer than the target timeframe in April, out of the 3.78 million patients on the waiting list.
There are also ongoing problems in waiting times for A&E and cancer treatment, with the figures showing that both the four-hour target to be seen in A&E and the 62-day goal for cancer patients to commence their treatment being missed.
Claire Marx, president of the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) expressed her concerns at these figures, commenting: “Too many patients are waiting excessively long.” Meanwhile, chief executive of NHS Providers, Chris Hopson has said that the concerns around the NHS’ ability to meet growing demand remains, and commented: “It is clear that trusts are continuing to do all they can. But it is equally clear the situation is unsustainable.”
