Duncan Lewis, Clinical Negligence Solicitors, Government announces seven-day GP access by 2020

The government has pledged seven-day access to GP services for NHS patients by 2020.

The announcement by the Prime Minister also revealed that seven-day hospital services would be rolled out across half the country by 2018.

The new services will make England the first country in the world to provide a seven-day health service, made possible by a £10 billion investment in the NHS.

Seven-day access to GP services will include evening GP appointments, as well as GP appointments at the weekend and by phone.

The government is committing £750 million over the next three years to fund improvements in healthcare premises, technology and more modern ways of working – such as supporting federations and larger practices in providing seven-day services through face-to-face, telephone, email and Skype consultations.

GP leaders have told the government that a new, voluntary contract option for general practice is needed – integrated with community nurses and other health and care professionals – to provide “more seamless, person-centred care” for NHS patients, in accordance with NHS England’s Five Year Forward View for patient services.

As part of a new “patient guarantee”, the Prime Minister announced that the government intends to make it a requirement in its new mandate to NHS England that they and clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) should ensure that every patient has access to seven-day services by 2020.
