A woman who suffered injury as a result of surgical error during a routine gallbladder operation has spoken of how she was left writhing on the floor in agony after surgeons severed a tube leading to her liver.

Katy Carey, 28, from New Addington in Surrey underwent a gallbladder operation at Croydon University Hospital in November and was discharged.

However, she began to suffer crippling pain, which doctors blamed on “residual discomfort” after the gallbladder operation.

Ms Carey said that when she called an ambulance because of the extent of the pain, it took two hours to arrive.

On a third visit to the hospital following surgery, doctors found that a tube to her liver had been severed during gallbladder surgery – and bile was leaking into her body as a result.

Ms Carey is now demanding an apology from Croydon University Hospital. Ms Carey told London newspaper the Evening Standard:

“I’m a carer for my autistic son and it meant I couldn’t look after him for several days – or my other son and daughter.

“I was writhing on the floor in agony – I thought I had internal bleeding and was going to die,” Ms Carey added.

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust said it was sorry Ms Carey was unhappy with her care and has offered to meet with her to discuss the issues.

The London Ambulance Service said that, although it would liked to have reached Ms Carey sooner, she did not fulfil the criteria for treatment as a priority patient.

Ms Carey is now considering taking legal action over the surgical error.
