Failures at London hospital to identify infections from blood samples and to record crucial blood pressure changes (11 December 2020)

A London hospital has been in the media recently for their failure to identify infections from blood samples and failure to record crucial blood pressure changes in patient’s medical records, these both have resulted in the deaths of young children.

The Independent reports a child died at 20 months, she was suffering from acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). However, she passed away as a result of mismanagement of her blood pressure which led to brain damage. It was discovered from independent experts that 11 hours of admission in ITU at the hospital were not accounted for, there were no entries in her medical records reflecting the blood pressure changes, had this been monitored and noted then she could have survived.

Another child died at 5 years of age, he was diagnosed with cancer after birth and was at the hospital following a liver transplant in 2012. However, he passed away as a result of miscommunication of an infection in his blood samples. The hospital carried out routine blood tests which showed an adenovirus infection, which if left untreated is deadly, and unfortunately his results were not sent to King’s College Hospital. It was not until two weeks later the infection was confirmed but by then it was too late.

These are just two cases that have been made public and there are many that are unable to be publicised either they are still on-going, were settled out of court or the Claimants do not want to be known to the public and wish for anonymity.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, we have had several enquiries regarding medical negligence claims due to the mismanagement of the care and treatment from several hospitals across England.

Whether it is for yourself or on behalf of loved ones who have now passed away please contact our specialist negligence solicitors who will be able to advice you through your potential claim.
