Brent Council has trained 25 local residents as Diabetes Community Champions, in a bid to help the increasing number of people suffering from diabetes in Brent.

The borough has a higher-than-average incidence of diabetes among its residents, with 8% of the population (25,178 people) suffering from the condition.

By 2030, it is estimated that 15% of adults in Brent will have diabetes, compared with 9% of the rest of the country.

Diabetes UK has been working in partnership with Brent Council to train the second cohort of twenty-five Brent residents to become Diabetes Community Champions – once training is completed, the champions are awarded certificates.

Lead Member for Community Wellbeing at Brent Council, Councillor Krupesh Hirani, presented the certificates and said:

“I'm very proud of these Brent residents for completing their training and making this commitment – in both time and energy – to help the community.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the Diabetes Community Champions and Brent Council to help reduce the impact of diabetes in Brent – and encourage healthier living.”

The newly trained diabetes community champions will be working in areas where there is a higher prevalence of diabetes – Kingsbury, Wembley and Harlesden – to raise awareness about signs, symptoms and risk factors of Type-2 diabetes and how individuals can reduce their risk.

They will also educate and raise awareness to people from targeted populations such as Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, where diabetes is more prevalent – and will signpost those diagnosed with Type-1 or Type-2 diabetes to local health services.
