Barnet Council in Greater London has helped to raise awareness of diabetes risks as part of Diabetes Week in June.

The council held a number of events for local people to help improve understanding of the disease – every day, 65 people die early as a consequence of diabetes and hundreds of others live with life changing complications, including amputation, sight problems (diabetic retinopathy) and healing impairment.

There are nearly 20,000 people in Barnet alone with diabetes, which also brings an increased risk of stroke and heart attack.

However, the council says that, with good management, those with diabetes can lead longer, healthier lives – with complications delayed, or even avoided.

The council is advising residents that it is therefore important to have a good understanding of the condition.

Diabetes affects blood sugar levels – Type 1 diabetes develops when the immune system attacks the cells which produce insulin and Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce sufficient insulin or the body is unable to process insulin.

Symptoms include feeling thirsty, increased nocturnal urination, extreme tiredness, blurred vision and cuts or wounds that are slow to heal.

While Type 1 diabetes is not preventable, Type 2 diabetes can be prevented through diet and lifestyle choices – because of this, the council says it is vital to be aware of risk factors and know how to reduce risk, as well as early diagnosis.

Before the council’s activities for Diabetes Week – which ran 11-18 June – The Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Brian Salinger, said:

“Diabetes is an extremely common disease, but awareness of how it can be prevented is quite low.

“Through a series of events, we hope to raise awareness – and give residents a place they can turn to for health advice.”

Diabetes Week is an annual event established by charity Diabetes UK to help raise awareness of the disease across the UK and raise funds for medical research into the disease.

The charity campaigns and supports those with diabetes, offering advice and an online forum for diabetes patients.
