Victims withdraw from giving evidence at Child Sex Abuse Inquiry (5 December 2014)

Victims of alleged historical child abuse have written to Home Secretary Theresa May saying they are withdrawing from the official inquiry into chid sexual exploitation because they have lost confidence in the government investigation.
Sky News reports that 24 victims who were due to give evidence to the inquiry said that they were withdrawing because in their view the investigation was “not fit for purpose”.
So far, two chairs of the inquiry have resigned – and the victims say in their letter that the inquiry should be scrapped until the panel chairing it is more “transparent”.
There have been allegations that those in charge of the inquiry are too close personally to figures in government and the judiciary, who may give evidence to the inquiry.
The letter from the 24 victims of alleged child sexual exploitation states:
“As survivors and associated professionals, we were very much hoping to take up the invitations to engage with your Ministerial Officers to discuss the Child Sex Abuse Inquiry, but we regret to say we have to decline.
“We, alongside many survivors, have made numerous representations to you regarding our view that the inquiry as it stands is not fit for purpose.”
Home Secretary Theresa May has said she is aware of the letter – but added that the issues raised in the letter “have been spoken about before”.
“But I am clear we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get to the bottom of this issue,” she added.
