Duncan Lewis, Child Care Solicitors, Mother charged with murder after baby dies from head injuries

The mother of a seven-week-old baby boy who died at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital last week has been charged with his murder.

Thomas Gacek was admitted to hospital with severe head and brain injuries but died the next day.

His mother 24-year-old Katarzyna Maria Gacek from Oldham has been charged with murder and child neglect.

Police have also charged two men with child neglect – 26-year-old Dawid Mokrzanowski also of Oldham and 35-year-old Darren James Butterfield of Chadderton.

The family of baby Thomas has issued a statement following the arrest of his mother:

“As a family, we are all truly devastated and deeply shocked by the tragedy we have all suffered and the loss of our little baby boy.

"We are a private family and, as such, we would ask the media allow us time to grieve in peace and come to terms with this tragic situation we have all found ourselves in.

"We are aware that there are numerous stories in circulation at present.

“However, we would ask that only official police statements given by Greater Manchester Police are taken as factually correct.”

Katarzyna Gacek, Dawid Mokrzanowski and Darren Butterfield are due to appear before Oldham Magistrates’ Court today (03/02/14).
