The City of Cardiff Council has launched a Disability Index, which details services available for disabled children and young people in Cardiff.
The new Disability Index is intended to ensure families of children and young people with disabilities or additional needs are kept up-to-date with the latest information on the services available to them.
Those on the Index will be given regular information about new developments and receive the quarterly newsletter “index.” The Disability Index will also help the service providers to plan their services across the city.
The Index is intended to give service providers a clearer picture of how many disabled and young children there are in Cardiff and – through Families First grant funding support – enable them to work together with other agencies to help better co-ordinate the services.
In order to be included on the Disability Index, the child or young person must be 18 or under, have a diagnosed disability or be in the process of a diagnosis – and referral should be made by a health, education or social care professional, although this is not always necessary.
The Cardiff Index is following an existing model being run in the Vale of Glamorgan.
At an event on Friday 17 March, young people were able to find out about the services and support available to children and young people with disabilities or additional needs in Cardiff.
City of Cardiff Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children and Families, Councillor Sue Lent, who attended the launch, said:
“The launch of the Disability Index is a huge step forward in helping children and young people with disabilities and additional needs in Cardiff.
“It will mean families will be able to receive the very latest information about services available to them on a regular basis.
“By signing up to the register, families will also be helping our team of service providers to be able to effectively coordinate and develop their services across Cardiff.”
