Barnsley Council has announced that it is teaming up with Sheffield Futures and Barnardos to talk to town centre businesses and Barnsley residents about child sexual exploitation (CSE) during national CSE Awareness Week.
On Monday, Barnsley Council’s CSE Social Worker and colleagues from Sheffield Futures and Barnardos targeted key town centre areas to talk to people about CSE and how to report concerns.
As well as being given advice about how to spot and report incidents of CSE, businesses were offered posters to display, to raise awareness of CSE Day on 18 March.
Cabinet Spokesperson for People (Safeguarding), Councillor Margaret Bruff, said:
“A great deal of work takes place throughout the year to tackle this important issue – but in order to reinforce messages and highlight the issues surrounding CSE, we’re joining up with partner agencies for a targeted day of action.
“We want to spread the message that it is never the young person’s fault and there is help available.
“I urge everyone to speak out against abuse and adopt a zero tolerance those who develop inappropriate relationships with children.”
The Children’s Society describes child sexual exploitation as a term used to explain what happens when abusers encourage children and young people under 18 into exploitative situations, contexts and relationships.
These often include the young person being given food, accommodation, drugs, affection, gifts or money in return for performing sexual activities.
CSE can occur through use of technology, without the child’s immediate recognition – including asking the child to post or send sexual images, with no immediate payment or gain. In all cases, those exploiting the child or young person have power over them.
According to The Children's Society perpetrators use violence, coercion and intimidation to target vulnerable young people
