A young father who attacked his baby daughter – including biting her on the forehead – has been jailed for 22 years after being convicted of her murder.
Aurimas Medvedevas, 23 – originally from Lithuania but now residing at Clifton Avenue in Peterborough – had denied murdering two-month-old Aukse on 5 September 2013, but changed his appeal to guilty on the third day of his trail at the Old Bailey, as a result of the strength of the evidence against him.
The court had heard that baby Aukse had sustained injuries consistent with having been shaken and punched – and one of the bite marks on her forehead matched her father’s own bite.
At the time Aukse was assaulted, she had been in the sole care of her father while her mother Dzesika Urbikaite, 22, was at work as an agency worker.
She found Aukse dead in her cot when she returned home from work. It is thought the baby died some hours after being attacked.
Medvedevas had claimed that he had been in a deep sleep and his daughter had fallen on the floor.
At the Old Bailey on Thursday (25/09/14), Judge Timothy Pontius said:
“The murder of a helpless infant only a few weeks’ old in circumstances of brutality which almost defy belief is an appalling crime beyond comprehension.”
Medvedevas’ defence lawyer told the court that at the time he attacked his daughter, he had been struggling to find work and the couple had money problems. Medvedevas was said to have shown “heartfelt remorse” for what he did to his daughter.
