When a patient undergoes surgery, a great deal of care must be taken for X-Rays, scans and other tests to be performed as part of a pre-operative evaluation. When medical staff fail to follow protocols or fail to communicate effectively, mistakes and errors can happen.
In cases of unnecessary surgery, errors might originate at the diagnostic stage of treatment, for example a patient might be incorrectly diagnosed with a condition requiring surgery.
Mistakes could be made in diagnosing different types of cancer such as breast cancer or prostate cancer, meaning a patient has an organ or tissue removed or undergoes a surgical procedure unnecessarily.
