The General Dental Council (GDC) has imposed conditions on a dentist who carried out orthodontic work without examination.
Dentist Aalok Shukla (Registration number 82876) was offering aligners (braces) through a website, by asking people to submit a photograph without a face-to-face examination by a trained clinician.
The General Dental Council (GDC) had received concerns about the website from a number of practitioners and the British Orthodontic Society, which raised concerns about patient safety.
Shukla has had conditions put on his ability to practise as a dentist for 12 months, pending a full hearing.
The decision of conditions was taken by the General Dental Council’s Interim Orders Committee in May. Among the conditions issued to Shukla are requirements that he is unable to perform orthodontic work without examining patients in person.
The GDC’s Director of Fitness to Practise, Jonathan Green said:
“Face-to-face consultations are an essential aspect of delivery of safe patient care.
“Where a business model potentially compromises patient care – or is on the face of it incompatible with our Standards for the Dental Team – we will act.”
