A maintenance company has been prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), after a roofing engineer was injured in a fall from the roof of a domestic property.
In February 2014, an employee of Aspect Maintenance Services Limited of London was repairing the roof of a domestic property, when he slipped and fell and landed on a table on the patio below.
He suffered a shattered elbow, a broken jaw, tissue damage to his knee and facial injuries.
An HSE investigation found that there was no edge protection on the roof at the time of the incident.
The HSE concluded that the company had failed to ensure that the roof work that their employee was carrying out was properly planned, appropriately supervised and was carried out in a manner which was safe, so far as was reasonably practicable.
At Southwark Crown Court in southeast London, Aspect Maintenance Services Limited of Rufus Business Centre, Ravensbury Terrace in London pleaded guilty to an offence under Regulation 4(1) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
Aspect Maintenance Services Limited was fined a total of £20,000, and ordered to pay £4,735 in costs.
Speaking after the hearing, HSE Inspector Gavin Pugh said:
“All work on roofs should be sufficiently risk assessed before any work is carried out.
“Edge protection – or other equally effective safety measures – should be in place for anything other than very short term work.”
