Cambridge City Council has prosecuted a local man for fly tipping hazardous waste on the public highway.
Parvez Khan of Darwin Drive in Cambridge was prosecuted after a council public realm enforcement officer responded to a report that a number of fridges and freezers had been dumped on the grass verge at St Thomas’s Road in the city.
Investigations were carried out and – with the assistance of members of the public – the officer was able to track down khan.
At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court, Khan pleaded guilty to criminal offences under Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Section 1 of the Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989.
Khan was ordered to complete a Community Order for 12 months, comprising 100 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay a fine of £1,000, plus costs of £1,467.90 – and a victim surcharge of £60.
After the hearing, Cambridge Council’s Executive Councillor for Environment and Waste, Councillor Peter Roberts, said:
“Fly-tipping is a crime that we take very seriously – particularly incidents of hazardous waste or blatant disregard for the environment.
“This sentence is reflective of the high level of work that the council’s enforcement and legal teams do – and we are very pleased that the court has imposed a sentence that reflects the seriousness and recklessness of this offence.”
