A Libyan man who took his two children from Birmingham to live in Libya have said he did so because he thought the UK was “too western”, according to lawyers.
Reporting restrictions on the case have been lifted by the High Court in the hope publicity will help return the children to their mother in the UK.
The children’s father is a Muslim and is estranged from their mother, 30-year-old Priscilla Micalleff. Lawyers representing Ms Micalleff say her estranged husband told her that he thought the UK was “too western” before taking the children out of the country to live in Libya.
Jamal Dgham, aged 35, is believed to have taken the children to the Bin Ashur area of Tripoli in Libya, where his mother lives. He is unlawfully holding daughter Aisha, 4, and his son Zakaria, nearly two, in breach of a court order made in England, it has been revealed.
The High Court released details of the case following private hearings in the Family Division of the High Court.
