Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, West Midlands launches summer campaign to help public spot signs of grooming and child sexual exploitation

Dudley Council in the West Midlands has said that it is the duty of everyone to play their part in tackling child sexual exploitation (CSE).

The council has launched a campaign to inform the public about how they can play their part in tackling CSE, by knowing how to spot the signs of when a child is being groomed or exploited.

West Midlands councils and West Midlands Police are working together to raise awareness of CSE – and the campaign website www.seeme-hearme.org.uk is a one-stop shop for information about CSE and how to spot the warning signs.

The website also offers help and advice to young people, parents and carers, as well as professionals and schools.

Dudley Council’s Cabinet Member for children’s services, Councillor Ian Cooper, said:

“With the lighter evenings, more of us – including groups of young people – are out and about in our towns later at night, so we just want everyone to make themselves aware of the signs of CSE and know how they can report any concerns.

“Preventing CSE is everyone’s responsibility and we all need to increase our awareness of it.

“I would urge people to visit our campaign website www.seeme-hearme.org.uk to find out more and see what they can do to help protect our children and young people.

“By being vigilant and knowing the warning signs to look out for, we can all help to tackle this abuse and keep our children safe.”

Chief executive of Solihull Council and regional lead for CSE, Nick Page, added:

“Everyone has their part to play in protecting our children and young from this horrific abuse.

“We should all make ourselves aware of the signs, so when we are out and about we can identify if a young person could be at risk and report any concerns.”

Dudley Council says that CSE can affect any child, regardless of their social or ethnic background.

CSE is child abuse and involves perpetrators grooming their victims in various ways – including in person, via mobile phones, or online – to gain their trust, before emotionally and sexually abusing them.

Warning signs of CSE include having friends who are older, persistently going missing, secretive relationships with unknown adults, truancy from school, chronic fatigue, constant calls on a mobile phone and the possession of money or new possessions.
