Welder receives six-figure settlement for severe injuries (4 March 2014)

A former welder from Manchester that suffered severe facial fractures following an accident at work has received a £500,000 settlement for his “life-changing” personal injuries.
The 49-year-old, who has not been named, was working on the maintenance of commercial vehicles for the Hulme Group in the North East when a hydraulic jack holding two pieces of steel struck him the face. Due to the sheer force of the impact, the victim suffered extensive injuries including a shattered left eye socket and severed nerves.
He has since undergone numerous invasive operations in attempt to rebuild his eye socket in addition to stimulation surgery in the brain and spine to limit the amount of pain in his face, though the success of those procedures have been mixed. The injuries have also forced him to wear a prosthetic mask when outside.
The victim, who is a Unite the Union member, said his employer had “failed to provide safe work equipment” and that the faulty jack had robbed him of his “freedom and independence”. He has now received a substantial six-figure sum following a successful claim.
