UK set to be the most populated EU member state by 2050 (3 August 2015)

Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, UK set to be the most populated EU member state by 2050

New figures from Eurostat have suggested that the UK will become the EU’s most populated country by 2050, according to current immigration estimates.

Cityam.com reports that Britain’s population will rise from its current level of 65 million to 67m in 2020.

By 2050, it is estimated the UK population will have reached 77m – and by 2080, the population will have grown to 85m.

Eurostat says that the UK’s population is growing as a result of both “natural” growth and immigration – while the population in other major EU member states such as Germany is decreasing.

Germany’s population is predicted to fall slightly between 2015 and 2020 – from 80.7m to 80.6m.

However, by 2050, Germany’s population will have fallen to 74.7m – and by 2080, the German population is estimated to have declined to the UK’s current level of 65.4m.

Eurostat says the population growth in Germany, Italy and Austria in 2013 was “solely” due to migration.

In 2013, Germany received the largest number of migrants (692,7000) – followed by the UK (526,000) and France (526,000).

In Germany in 2013, there was no increase in the population as a result of “natural” population growth, the Eurostat report says.
