A seven-year old girl was admitted to hospital last week after her tongue became stuck in the lid of a travel mug purchased at The Disney Store. Since the incident, The Disney Store has removed the mug from their stored and destroyed their current stock.

Megan Donald’s tongue became stuck in the drinking spout of the cup’s lid because of the suction created. An absence of ventilation holes meant the suction was too strong and the cup could not be moved. Megan’s mother was called to her school – Harestanes Primary in Kirkintilloch – and an ambulance was called when her mother and the school’s staff could not remove the mug, and Megan was struggling to stay awake.

Megan’s mother, Natalie Donald, explained that the bottom of the cup was filled with water and very heavy, but could not be unscrewed due to the suction. Natalie said her daughter was “panicking and very upset” as a result, and thankfully, Natalie was able to make a small hole between Megan’s tongue and the lid, allowing the cup to be unscrewed.

Megan was taken to A&E at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, where medical staff made several attempts were made to remove the lid. Mrs Donald explained that the doctor had never seen a similar incident, so the process was “trial and error”.

The medical team had to resort to using a hacksaw and a dentist drill to finally remove the lid, which had been stuck on Megan’s tongue for over four hours, leaving it purple and swollen.

Although a Disney Store spokesperson told the BBC that the store would be “immediately stopping sales” and “destroying all other existing stock”, they said that there were no current plans to recall the product. Natalie Donald, however, has expressed concern that another child could suffer a similar incident and has called for the mugs to be recalled. Natalie commented “I think it’s a design flaw that allowed this to happen” and said to the BBC Scotland news website “I just want to warn people about them”.
