Eastleigh Council in Hampshire has announced that a new community is to be built in the area, with planning permission for 560 new homes forming part of the first phase application.

Eastleigh Local Area Committee granted planning permission for the first phase of the new community at a site south of Chestnut Avenue and west of Stoneham Lane in Eastleigh.

The residential part of the application is for 560 homes, comprising a mix of one-, two-, three-, four- and five-bed homes – and nearly 200 of the new homes will be affordable for rent and shared ownership through a housing association.

In addition to the residential development, the application includes a new “Avenue Park” open space in the centre of the site, with two children’s play areas, green corridor links through the development, and a number of smaller areas of open space and play provision.

There will also be pedestrian and cycle links across the site, some of which will follow the routes of historic carriage drives – key to the development is the construction of the new link road that will run between Chestnut Avenue and Stoneham Lane.

A council spokesperson said:

“This exciting development of a new community will see enhanced facilities for all Eastleigh residents, with great improvements to parts of the historic park and restoration of historic buildings.

“More people than ever before will be able to have access to this land and understand the historic value with its restoration.

“It will also provide much needed affordable housing, allowing local people to be able to have a home of their own.”

The council says that, in total, the new development will provide 1,100 new homes – and the proposal also includes plans to create a new local centre, with a new primary school, children’s pre-school nursery, community building, residential care home, retail and office buildings and car parking.
