Torbay Council supports Bowel Cancer Awareness month (7 April 2016)

Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Torbay Council supports Bowel Cancer Awareness month

Torbay Council is supporting Bowel Cancer Awareness month in April, during which Bowel Cancer UK wants to raise the awareness of bowel cancer through communities – and highlight the symptoms of cancer which can lead to early diagnosis.

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and affects more than 41,000 people every year – the cancer is also known as colorectal cancer.

Bowel cancer develops from pre-cancerous growths, called polyps, which are the result of abnormal replication of cells caused by cancerous changes in a cell.

The earlier the cancer is detected, the better the outcome for the patient – early diagnosis and treatment can help patients increase their life expectancy.

People aged between 60 and 74 are eligible for a free screening test every two years, which is available as a postal service.

A spokesperson for Torbay Council said:

“Bowel Cancer is an extremely prominent health concern for many people in our community – if you have any worries or change in bowel habits, please speak to a health professional.

“This month is all about fundraising, spreading the word and encouraging people to teach themselves about the risks of bowel cancer, so everybody can get involved with this campaign.”
