Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Thurrock Council Trading Standards warn about cosmetic products containing harmful ingredients

Thurrock Council's Trading Standards department is warning consumers to be aware of potentially dangerous cosmetic products after a local retailer was prosecuted for selling cosmetics containing harmful ingredients.

Beauty by Zara on Clarence Road in Grays, Essex was investigated by Trading Standards for breaches of the EU Cosmetics Regulation and the Consumer Protection Act 1987.

Analysis of one skin lightening product – Dr James UV Whitening Cream – found it contained harmful levels of mercury.

Both the company – Beauty by Zara Limited – and its director, Imran Ahmed Bashir, pleaded guilty and were fined a total of £2,649 each.

Thurrock Council’s Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods, Councillor Sue MacPherson, said:

“Residents should be aware of the dangers some skin lightening creams pose – products should only be purchased from reputable retailers which have the name and address of a company within the EU.

“Some illicit beauty products contain very harmful substances – such as mercury and lead – and consumers must research them thoroughly beforehand.”
