Southampton football club supporters have been involved in a violent clash with Dutch football fans in Arnhem, leading to the arrest of three Southampton fans and 50 supporters from the Netherlands.
The Evening Standard reports that Southampton FC was playing Vitesses Arnhem in the town, when supporters of Rotterdam-based club Feyenoord allegedly provoked them, according to an eye witness.
Riot police stormed Arnhem’s bar district Korenmarkt at 5pm, after British football fans were seen throwing chairs and fighting with Dutch fans.
Fans had charged in the square after the fight broke out – prompting the arrival of Dutch riot police and horses as glasses, chairs and punches were thrown by fans.
A spokesman for Southampton FC said:
“Southampton Football Club are aware of an incident away from the official fanzone in Arnhem.
“Fifty Dutch fans have been arrested, three English. Visiting fans are being provided with buses to the stadium.
“We are continuing to liaise with local police – and will take relevant action against those involved.”
