Tens of thousands of individuals convicted of crimes have been found to reoffend within one month of being handed a caution. In only a year, 21,000 offenders reoffended within a month of receiving a caution. The statistics were released after Crispin Blunt, the Prisons Minister, urged for fewer young offenders to be handed jail terms.

In 2011, police provided 235,600 individuals with cautions. Critics claim that a caution, which remains on an individual’s record, undermines the message that the criminal justice system is trying to send out. The statistics revealed that in just one year, 6,007 child offenders and 14,994 adults went onto committed further crimes after a month of being given a caution. Almost one-quarter of all offenders aged under-18, given reprimands, ended up reoffending within one year.

Despite these statistics, Mr. Blunt claimed that he desired to see fewer child offenders being handed jail terms. He stated that, in some cases, restorative justice could satisfactorily resolve incidents in children. Criminologist David Green, from the think-tank, Civitas, told while there were tens of thousands of individuals caught reoffending within one month of being given a caution, they will only represent a small proportion of the actual number of individuals reoffending. He added that the figures showed that cautions were being used inappropriately and that career criminals should be handed more sanctions that are serious.
