A motion at the TUC Congress has highlighted the positive contribution made to the UK by migrants.
The motion that attacks on pay, jobs, working conditions and public services are not a result of immigrants but of government attacks in line with its austerity agenda was passed by delegates.
The motion also called for the TUC Race Relations Committee and affiliates to campaign in opposition to the Immigration Bill.
Public and Commercial Services Union delegate Zita Holbourne – moving the motion on behalf of the TUC Black Workers' Conference – said:
“The Immigration Bill demonstrates how the racist rhetoric from far-right parties is poisoning the political climate.
“We need to stand up for migrants and against racism.”
The motion called for TUC Race Relations Committee and affiliates to oppose the Immigration Bill by:
• Calling on all constituency MPs to oppose the Bill
• Calling on the Labour Party to give a commitment to repeal the Bill
• Supporting and joining the MAX (Movement Against Xenophobia) campaign
• Opposing and dispelling myths and lies spreading about migrants as part of wider anti-austerity and anti-cuts campaigns.
Zita Holbourne said that the Immigration Bill – which became law in May – had led to migrants being made scapegoats and had increased racial discrimination in the workplace.
