A concert pianist has won his legal battle to have an injunction lifted, so that he can publish his memoirs which detail how he was sexually abused as a child.
The Court of Appeal had granted a temporary injunction in October 2014 to prevent publication of the book, after the ex-wife of concert pianist James Rhodes raised concerns that extracts of the book might come to the attention of their 12-year-old son and cause psychological or emotional trauma to him.
After the ruling, the 40-year-old pianist took his case to the Supreme Court for a ruling.
After a hearing in January, five judges sitting in the Supreme Court ruled in Mr Rhodes’ favour on Wednesday (20/05/15).
After the hearing, Mr Rhodes told the Evening Standard
“This is a victory for freedom of speech. If this had been allowed, anyone could have used this to ban any book.”
Mr Rhodes went on to say that publication of the book would not harm his son:
“He is not going to read it …This is not a children’s book.”
