Selby District Council has prosecuted a former Selby resident for benefit fraud, after an application for Housing Benefit was found to contain a false statement.
Cameron Kane Carroll, 27 – formally of Selby and now living at Bowness Avenue in Bradford – dishonestly made a false statement on his application for Housing Benefit by falsely declaring that he was not related to the landlord, who was in fact his stepfather.
As a result, Carroll was overpaid by £4,875 in Housing Benefit.
On Wednesday, 11 May 2016 at York Magistrates’ Court, Carroll entered a guilty plea to the offence of dishonestly making a false statement with a view to obtaining benefit, contrary to Section 111A of the Social Security Administration Act 1992.
He was given a 12-month Conditional Order involving 60 hours of unpaid work – and was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £60.
