A Polish national arrested in Tamworth in Staffordshire under a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) has appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London and is due to appear again on Monday (20/04/15) after being remanded.

Local Staffordshire newspaper the Tamworth Herald reports that the EAW had been issued in Poland in May 2005 in connection with a robbery committed between December 2004 and January 2005 in Gdansk, Poland.

The man – reported to be in his thirties – was arrested in Tamworth on 11 April, after police officers stopped him as part of a routine vehicle check.

“We arrested a man at 10.30pm in relation to a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) dating back to 2005.

“He will be taken to Westminster Court in London where they will decide if he's remanded or granted bail.

“He will then be flown back to Poland for questioning,” said an officer following the arrest.

European Arrest Warrants enable EU member states to request the return of individuals believed to be in another EU member state who are wanted in connection with an offence.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) processes EAWs in the UK. In Scotland, EAWs processed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS).

After the man’s first appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, a spokesman for the court said:

“The man appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on April 13. He has been remanded until April 20, when he will appear again at 10am.”
