The Scout Association has issued an apology to victims who were sexually abused by scoutmasters in the organisation.

BBC News reports,/a> that the Scout Association has to date paid around £500,000 in compensation to men who were sexually abused who as children were in the care of scoutmasters, including the sum of £45,000 to one claimant in 2011.

The association has said it is “deeply sorry” to anyone who has been abused in its care, but who has yet to come forward to claim.

The BBC reports that, since details of the Jimmy Savile child abuse scandal were uncovered, more than 50 people have come forward to make compensation claims against the Scout Association.

Since October 2012, the association has been notified of 36 compensation claims from victims of alleged sexual abuse.

The association has only received 12 other such claims since it was established in 1907.

The Scout Association said that the safety of young people was its “number one priority”.

In May 2014, former scoutmaster Martin Tucker was jailed for 12 years for sexual abuse offences against boys in his care while he worked as a scoutmaster in the 1960s and 1970s.

During the investigation, police uncovered a file which included statements by boys who claimed they had been abused, but which had not been passed on to police by the Scout Association at the same.

After Tucker was sentenced, the association decide to review his case – and concluded the file should have been passed on to the appropriate authorities at the time allegations were made. The association said that, for the last 20 years, adults working for the association have been required to report any complaints about abuse to the police.
