Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Scottish teachers paid over £300,000 for personal injury claims

According to new figures released by the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), Scottish schoolteachers and college lecturers were paid a cumulative total of over £300,000 last year for personal injury and compensation claims arising from assault and accidents at work.

The largest pay out was the £130,000 received by a teacher who suffered long term-injuries after a violent attack by a pupil. Another payment amounting to £7,000 was made after a pupil threw a sign at a tutor and caused him retina injuries, while £4,400 was given to a teacher that was punched in the face by a schoolchild.

However, the most frequent compensation claims were related to trips and falls in the work place, with scores of lecturers falling on wet floors. EIS General Secretary, Larry Flanagan said: “Such accidents are completely avoidable if employers implement basic, inexpensive safety requirements.”

The amount paid out during the 2013 calendar year is a significant fall on the record high of £1.5m recorded in 2012, when a number of serious injuries took place. One of the more bizarre incidents included a teacher slipping on a chip in the Glasgow dinner hall, which lead to a £4,500 pay out.

Mr Flanagan concluded: “There are almost 50,000 teachers and over 700,000 pupils in school and pre-school so accidents or incidents will occasionally take place. Serious incidents are rare, but parents and teachers should be assured that authorities and schools have policies in place to deal with situations that may arise.”
