The Royal Borough of Greenwich is working with the Metropolitan Police to tackle knife crime in the borough.

The council participated in Operation Sceptre 8 – the London-wide crackdown on knife crime – and earlier in May and undertook weapons sweeps, as well as targeting knife crime by mounting hot spot patrols and patrols to target those who are known to habitually carry knives.

The council is also planning test purchase operations among retailers with Royal Greenwich Trading Standards and the Metropolitan Police Cadets.

Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Environment, Councillor Jackie Smith, said:

“The Royal Borough of Greenwich is proud to work hand-in-hand with the Metropolitan Police on doing all we can to tackle knife crime.

“Operation Sceptre 8 provided an invaluable opportunity to intensify our campaign and drive home the message that we will absolutely not tolerate this sort of crime.”

Borough Commander Simon Dobinson added:

“Knife crime is a London-wide problem and it warrants a concerted and co-ordinated London-wide response.

“We have had a very successful operation in Greenwich, removing knives and the criminals carrying them off the streets – and we will continue to take the strongest action with the Royal Borough of Greenwich to tackle knife crime head-on.”

The Royal Borough works in partnership with the Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) on its “Street Violence Ruins Lives” initiative – CACT runs an awareness programme in schools, as well as an estates-based programme for young people identified as being involved in crime, and targeted specialist work with repeat offenders who are at risk of custodial sentences.”
