Rotherham Council is encouraging the public to support Dementia Awareness Week by taking part in free Dementia Friends sessions run by the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dementia Awareness Week runs from 15 to 21 May – and the free sessions run by Rotherham Council are open to anyone of any age, with the aim of helping people learn more about the condition.

The Dementia Friends initiative was launched with the aim of recruiting one million Dementia Friends by 2015 – currently there are more than 1.5 million registered Dementia Friends.

In Rotherham, a total of 4,699 people have already become a Dementia Friend as of March 2016, including more than 200 council staff

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, Councillor David Roche, said:

“Most people will know someone who is either living with or caring for a person with dementia – this awareness week is an ideal opportunity to improve understanding of dementia across the borough and highlight the small steps we can all do to help people who are affected by it.

“The council is committed to working towards becoming dementia friendly –
and we are proud to have recently become a member of Rotherham Dementia Action Alliance.

“We’re also encouraging other organisations to join the alliance – we are really pleased that our housing maintenance and repairs partners, Willmott Dixon and Morrison Mears, are already members.”
.
Rotherham Dementia Action Alliance Co-ordinator, Kathryn Rawling, added:

“The Dementia Friend sessions have been a great success – we put you in the shoes of a person with dementia and show you the small things you can do to make a difference: be reassuring and patient, communicate clearly and think about how someone with dementia might perceive an everyday environment differently.

“It’s fantastic that so many Rotherham residents have completed the training so far – and I would encourage anyone to attend a session or sign up online.”

As well as these sessions, other regular activities take place across the borough to support people with dementia, with information available at the Alzheimer’s Society website.
