Rotherham Council has successfully prosecuted a local man for Blue Badge fraud – the 100th Blue Badge prosecution the council has brought.
Houman Raki, 25, of Warren Avenue in Rawmarsh was found guilty in his absence of using his mother’s Blue Badge to park his car in a pay and display parking bay in January 2016.
The case was heard before Rotherham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 14 September – and was the 100th prosecution since the council began to tackle Blue Badge fraud in the town in 2010.
Raki was fined £220 with £300 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, Councillor Denise Lelliott, said:
“This is yet another example of a Blue Badge being used for the convenience of someone who was not entitled to use it.
“In achieving 100 prosecutions, the council has demonstrated its determination to tackle this anti-social, selfish type of parking.
“Drivers need to consider whether it is worth risking a conviction to avoid putting money in a pay and display machine – if we catch drivers using Blue Badges without being entitled to do so, we will prosecute where it is in the public interest.”
