The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has prosecuted a roofing company based in Gloucestershire, after workers were put at risk of exposure to significant levels of lead.
During a routine inspection by HSE, the company – McDonnell-Price (Roofing) Contractors Limited – was observed carrying out replacement lead work on a roof in Worcester.
HSE inspectors found that the firm had not assessed the risks of exposure to working with lead – and had failed to implement suitable controls to prevent that exposure.
On Wednesday 4 November 2015, at Worcester Magistrates’ Court, McDonnell-Price (Roofing) Contractors Limited of Stroud Business Centre in Gloucestershire pleaded guilty to Control of Lead at Work 6(1).
The company was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay £893.95 in costs.
The HSE said that there were no known medical effects in the two workers exposed to the lead – although significant levels of lead were found in their blood.
