Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Road Safety Week launches with plea from injured cyclist

A cyclist who was knocked from her bicycle and dragged along the road by a skip lorry has spoken out about her experience to mark Road Safety Week, which began on Monday (17/11/14).

Elizabeth Crockett, 34, from Greenwich in southeast London told the Evening Standard newspaper that she was cycling to work on 4 October 2013 when her bicycle was in a collision with a skip lorry as it turned onto Battersea Bridge.

Ms Crockett was dragged for 30 yards and suffered a fractured collarbone, fractured back, seven broken ribs, friction burns and bruising. She spent six days in St George’s Hospital and on discharge used a walking brace as her broken collarbone meant she was unable to use crutches.

Ms Crockett was unable to return to work for two months – and still suffers from pain, as well as anxiety. She is currently undergoing counselling to help her cope with the psychological trauma of the accident, as well as rehabilitation to help her recover form her physical injuries.

The incident has left her too traumatised to return to cycling – and she is appealing for witnesses to the incident as police have advised her that there is not enough evidence to bring charges against the lorry driver.

Ms Crockett told the Evening Standard:

“I hope Road Safety Week reminds drivers to be on the lookout at all times for vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians, to prevent anyone else from suffering like I have.

“More must be done to help cyclists and motorists share the roads, particularly lorry drivers – I can’t understand why action hasn’t been taken, when there seem to be incidents occurring like mine on an almost daily basis.”

Ms Crockett said she remembered cycling along the side of the skip lorry and realising that there was not enough space between her and the lorry before it suddenly “veered” into her.

Road Safety Week is organised by road safety campaigners Brake and this year the campaign focuses on sharing the roads and preventing selfish driving under the “Look out for each other” slogan.

Brake says,/a> that on roads in the UK there are five deaths and 61 serious injuries every day – and is calling for more protection for cyclists and pedestrians.

During Road Safety Week – which lasts until 23 November – police forces across the country will be concentrating on traffic enforcement, to catch drivers who are putting other road users at risk.

Brake says that two fixed penalty notices for careless driving or speeding offences are issued every minute in Britain.
