Review calling for greater employee rights for those on zero-hour contracts (25 May 2017)

Date: 25/05/2017
Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Review calling for greater employee rights for those on zero-hour contracts

A government commissioned inquiry into controversial working practices will order an overhaul of zero-hour contracts.

The inquiry is being led by Matthew Taylor, head of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), who believes that workers may be being exploited by their employers.

The inquiry will call for employees on zero-hours contract to be given the right to make a request to be moved onto a fixed-hour contract, similar to how an employee currently has the right to request flexible hours, for example after having children.

UK business organisation – the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) – has expressed their support of the idea, and believes that all employees should have their terms and conditions in a written statement.

There are approximately 900,000 employees on zero-hour contracts, and although the contracts benefit some people, for example students, they have been attacked for allowing employers to deny people of their full employee rights.
