Preston Crown Court has jailed two men who overcharged an 84-year-old man for gardening work between February 2014 and July 2014.
John Miller pleaded guilty to obtaining £8,000 from the elderly victim for gardening work carried out for him – both John and Henry Miller pleaded guilty to further attempting to defraud the same man on the day the police were contacted.
John Miller was sentenced to 19 months’ imprisonment and Henry Miller was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment for the offences.
After the hearing, Senior Crown Prosecutor for North West CPS, Katie Marsden, said:
“John and Henry Miller deliberately targeted the victim in order to defraud him.
“John Miller called at his home several times over a number of months, offering to do gardening work which he charged exorbitant fees for – the work carried out was minimal and of poor quality.
“On the final day, the victim was then followed to the bank, where he was supposed to withdraw money while Henry Miller waited in a van in a car park nearby to take the money from him.
“After the victim explained to staff in the bank what had happened to him, the police were alerted and the two men were arrested.
“Targeting and preying on vulnerable or elderly people in their own homes is an aggravating feature to this offending.
“Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure in their own home – and the CPS is dedicated towards bringing people who commit such crimes to justice.”
