Portsmouth City Council says it will build on the success of a new scheme to help to raise the expectations and aspirations of and outcomes for young people leaving care.

The council played a key role in phases 1 and 2 of the New Beginnings Project, delivered by the Care Leavers Foundation.

Portsmouth City Council was selected as one of 30 local authorities across the UK – and one of only two authorities in the southeast – to work in partnership to improve services for young people leaving care, including increasing their future education, training and employment prospects.

The project came to an end with an event called A Way Forward For Care in London earlier in July, where partners shared their best practice.

The council also outlined its commitment to build on the work of the project, continuing to provide services for young care leavers as part of its role as corporate parents.

The fostering service is currently looking for voluntary work experience and training opportunities for young care leavers with local companies in and around Portsmouth – ranging from short-term placements to longer-term opportunities, easing the transition of youngsters to independent living and helping them prepare for life in the workplace.

Portsmouth City Council's Cabinet Member for Children's Social Care, Councillor Ryan Brent said:

“The New Belongings initiative has been a fantastic project funded by the Department For Education – and although the project is coming to an end, the council will continue to work to facilitate education, employment and training opportunities for young people leaving care as part of its role as corporate parents.”
