It has been reported that a hospital patient has been waiting almost four years to be released from hospital, despite being declared “fit for discharge”.
The unnamed patient has been said to have a “serious mental health condition”, learning disability and physical health problems, and has been in a hospital bed in Wales for over 1,338 days. They are expected to be discharged in “around six months”.
Conservative AM Darren Millar requested the details of “delayed discharges” in hospitals, which revealed a further two patients in Wales have been stuck in hospital beds for at least a year-and-a-half each, a situation that Millar described as “truly scandalous”. Millar said: “No patient should have to wait almost four years to be discharged from hospital. While bed blocking is extremely costly for the NHS in Wales, the real cost if the quality of life of patients for whom it affects.”
