Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that paramedics are taking an average of 25 sick days off every year – an increase from 14.8 days the previous year.
The TaxPayers’ Alliance is questioning whether a sicknote culture has developed among the NHS and emergency services.
The figures also show that nurses take an average of 16.9 days off sick every year – and at any one time, 4.4% of NHS staff are off sick, with an average of 15.5 days off sick for every NHS staff member very year.
Midwives taken an average of 17.5 days off sick every year, the figures show.
However, doctors were found to take 4.4 days off sick on average every year – almost half the number of days NHS managers take off sick, which was found to be 8.5 days on average.
Jonathan Isaby from the TaxPayers’ Alliance said:
“We need a cultural shift – not just in the NHS, but across the whole public sector, because taxpayers can’t afford to keep paying for individuals not to be at work.”
The average number of sick days off per year in the public sector is 2.9 days – compared with 1.8 days off sick per year for staff in the private sector, the Daily Mail reports.
