Nottinghamshire County Council’s youth justice programme is calling for new volunteers.
The county council was praised for its youth justice work, after a recent independent inspection of its work with young offenders and victims.
There were just 219 first time youth offenders in 2013-2014, compared with 954 offenders recorded in 2009-2010. Re-offending rates have also fallen by 3.6% cent over the same five-year period.
Nottinghamshire County Council says it needs new community panel members for its Youth Offender Panels, which support young people in repairing the harm they have caused and reduce re-offending risks.
As well as addressing rehabilitation, the scheme also offers victims the opportunity to have their views addressed with the young person as part of the process.
This can take place by a victim directly attending the panel – or indirectly, if the victim’s views are read out at the panel by a Remedi Restorative Justice Practitioner (advocate of the victim).
Remedi (restorative justice and mediation initiatives) is a voluntary sector charity, which has been providing restorative services provider across the youth and adult criminal justice system in schools and communities since 1996.
Vice-Chairman of the Children and Young People’s Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council, Councillor Liz Plant, said:
“Our youth justice team do a fantastic job working with young people to reduce the risk of re-offending and addressing the harm they have caused through offending and to reduce the risk of re-offending.”
