A GPS tracking system to protect victims of domestic violence from further attacks is being piloted by Northumbria Police.

The Daily Mail reports that the system involves offenders being tagged with a GPS ankle collar and carrying a handheld device when they leave home.

The GPS system will alert police if offenders go near their victim’s home, place of work or schools their children attend.

Victims will also carry monitoring equipment to enforce exclusion zones.

Northumbria police and crime commissioner Vera Baird said that the pilot scheme would not only bring down incidents of domestic violence – but also has the potential to save lives.

The system was launched by Northumbria Police this week and the force also said the technology would save lives – and act as a deterrent for offenders “thinking of contacting their former partners”.

Under the system, exclusion zones can also be used to support bail or restraining order conditions.

The scheme is currently only available on a voluntary basis, after both parties agree to be monitored, however.

Northumbria police said the system would be available to all couples, regardless of whether on party had a criminal conviction for domestic violence.

Detective Inspector Phil Bond said:

“This new tagging equipment alerts us to a potentially violent encounter between a couple – and gives us additional options to safeguard victims.

“This equipment will be used on a voluntary basis following an agreement from both parties.

“But it will undoubtedly provide added safety for a victim, who will receive early warnings of a possible meeting with their perpetrator.”

In 2014, a total of 107,104 sexual and domestic violence crimes were prosecuted – an increase of 18.3% on figures for 2013.

The increase in domestic violence prosecutions has partly been the result of the police being more willing to prosecute cases of domestic violence, with the highest number of prosecutions ever taken on by the CPS.

Vera Baird added:

“Any new technology that can reduce these incidents is, of course, a welcome addition to traditional policing methods already used by our officers to protect and safeguard victims.

“I know the misery and suffering domestic abuse causes – and the impact it has not only on the victim but also on those around them, including any children.”
