Police in Northumbria say a major investigation into allegations of sexual offences against women and girls is ongoing, after more than 100 victims have come forward.

BBC News reports that Operation Sanctuary was launched after two women spoke to police alleging sexual offences that had taken place in the region.

Last week, nineteen men appeared at Mid and South East Northumberland Magistrates’ Court facing charges of rape, sex trafficking, arranging child prostitution, false imprisonment and supplying Class A drugs.

The charges relate to 12 women and girls. The ongoing investigation into sexual offences against women and girls involves children as young as 13.

So far, a total of 20 men have been charged as a result of Operation Sanctuary – another man is due to appear in court in the near future, police say.

A statement on Northumbria Police’s website said those arrested were from “a range of communities and backgrounds”.

The police statement added:

“While much of the activity has been in Newcastle, other areas of the force are affected.

“The investigation continues to progress at pace and there is a dedicated team of officers looking at all the information police continue to receive.

“Our absolute priority is to protect any victims or potential victims and we are working closely with those involved and our partners to ensure they receive the appropriate support.”
