North Wales Teacher Jailed For Sexual Activity with a Child (25 November 2011)

A teacher has been handed a four-year jail term following having sex with a 14-year-old girl. A court has heard that John Grindell, a high school music teacher, had become infatuated with his victim. He gave the girl alcohol and had sex with her when she was drunk. Mr. Grindell, who had initially been charged with rape, is said to have been eagerly waiting for the girl’s 16th birthday while on bail. The court heard how he set up an Internet-based clock that counted down the length of time that he would have to wait until the girl’s birthday, a day on which he had hoped to resume their relationship.
Mr. Grindell was arrested once again and was remanded in custody. He later admitted his guilt to engaging in sexual activity with a child. Judge Gareth Jones told the married father of two that he had considered handing him a jail term akin to that provided to a dangerous offender but decided to hand down a determinate four-year jail term. Mr. Grindell, of Wrexham, was ordered by the judge to register as a sex offender and has prevented him from contacting the girl and her parents. Mr. Grindell has also been banned from entering into employment involving children or vulnerable adults. The judge claimed to have considered Mr. Grindell’s previous exemplary character when handing down his sentence.
